Heading into a cold winter?

Updated: Nov 3, 2022

It might be cold this winter, the temperature is still likely to drop quite a bit. It might be cold because it's too costly to warm your home. Every time you go to the grocery store, you might notice the bill is creeping up. Or it might feel cold if you think about the world around us, on a high-speed train to extreme weather events, biodiversity collapse, social exploitation and unrest. Or it might feel cold because you feel you are swimming against the current all alone, for a just cause.

It's uncomfortable.

And it offers an opportunity to become proactive about solutions. Let's keep it close to home: not worry about what central banks, governments or businesses do. Let's look at what you and I can do.

Wear layers. Possibly buy lots of second-hand layers.

Invite your tribe over. Warm bodies heat the space. Make some tea, light a candle, put some fun music on and dance. Movement will warm you up. And cheer you up.

Reach out: offer help. Ask for help. Give a hug.

Donate money, food, clothing. And know-how. Accept help when it is offered to you and you need it. There is no pity on offering it, and no shame in accepting it. No judgement. Just compassion. Stay with it.

And - maybe most importantly - join efforts, build your community (yes, there are lots of like minded people around you, sometimes we just don't see what's right there in front of us). Allow the wisdom of the collective to manifest. Have faith in the experience. Together we might go slower, but we go further.

Most of nature rests in the winter. You have the opportunity to slow down as well, to rest, to take a step back and ask yourself: Am I still heading in the right direction? Listen to what your brain, heart, intuition and body tell you.

And once that's all sorted, it's nice to realize: after winter comes spring. Everything is impermanent, time to let go. When we let go, things can flow, new ways unfold. Release the cold, the worries, allow Life to thrive. When you are in a good place, you can move mountains - if you want to ;-) (And moving a mountain rock by rock will will most certainly warm you up.)
