Most resources out there are for experienced investors, so you'll first need to build some experience and confidence, before taking a much deeper dive. Fundamentally these are the options:

  • giving 'a loan' to a startup. They need to pay the money back with some interest

  • buying a share in a startup. You're in for the good times and the bad ones

  • donating money to startups (philanthropy, this is not investing).

Startups can come together in various incubators, accelerators, conferences, or online-networks. Some useful resources for startups are Jenny Kassan's blog, Considered Capital, or Impact Shakers. Just like with other things: if you give it time, read some resources and allow yourself to refine your needs, your specific angle on type of investment opportunity, sector, geography, outcomes and impacts you want to contribute will crystallize. And then you can specialize, dive deeper into the issues closest to your heart. It's nice to become part of a formal or informal network to spar, and help each other out. We also hope to hear from you - get in touch!
